The healthcare system in Bulgaria is expanding and improving, however not without problems. Medical staff in Bulgaria are highly trained although they donot always have access to equipment and facilities as in other European countries. There are also a growing number of private hospitals and clinics where doctors will expect immediate payment for their services. The United Kingdom and other countries have reciprocal agreements for free emergency health care. You will need to produce your passport in order to receive such treatment. You will however have to pay for medicines dispensed from public pharmacies. Major improvements in the health care system began in 1999, assisted by the world bank and in mid-2000 the healthcare through insurance system came into force. By 2002, 95% of the population had signed up with a local doctor.
Dental Services:
Most dentists in Bulgaria are private and of a high standart. Emergency treatment is available at little or no cost for UK nationals.
